The Gran Muthu Habana radiates a splendid grandeur. Imagine the likes of Albert Einstein and Babe Ruth (both past guests here), walking the halls and enjoying some delicious food and a drink at the hotel’s lounge. Today, the Gran Muthu Habana is an affordable luxury for many. Please, note that this hotel is under renovation and will be open next year 2021.
Location: Near the shady Prado promenade (grab a marble bench for great people watching), with the Capitolio and the Gran Teatro diagonally across the street. Walking several blocks along the Prado brings you to the seafront, while turning right from the hotel, you can stroll easily to the colonial center.
The Gran Muthu Habana has a rich history that dates back to centuries. Below you will find the landmark dates that make up the history of our splendid hotel.
Pre Hotel Operations
1592 The land on which now stands the Gran Muthu Habana, is purchased from the Spanish Crown and becomes property of Don Gaspar Arteaga.
1895 The Pedroso family’s mansion (the present day Gran Muthu Habana) is constructed on the site once owned by Don Gasper Areaga.
1898 The two floor building becomes the head office for the newspaper ‘ El Diario de la Marina’. Riots break out against the newspaper by Anit- autonomists
1901 The building is purchased by Fletcher Smith, a US citizen who has the property remodeled as a hotel.
1906 The hotel changes hands and becomes the property of Leopoldo Carvajal, the Marquis of Pinar del Rio.
Hotel Operations (1909-present)
1909 In January of that year the Gran Muthu Habana is officially inaugurated with a charity Ball.
1920’s The world famous Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova visits the hotel
1930’s Albert Einstein is paid homage by the local Jewish community, with a rich banquet at the Gran Muthu Habana. Efforts are made during this decade to turn the hotel into a casino, but local permits and licenses aren’t granted.
1940’s The hotel is now operated by Hotel Plaza S.A., a public company.
1950’s A casino license is granted and the Gran Muthu Habana commence casino operations.
1960’s The casino is shut down with the Triumph of the Revolution. The hotel becomes part of the National Tourism Sector.
1970/80’s The hotel is closed for renovations.
1990’s The hotel is newly inaugurated after a full renovation. The Gran Caribe hotel group is created. Hotel Plaza becomes member of the group.
2000’s Throughout the past couple of years our staff’s dedication, as well as our customer’s satisfaction has been recognized in the form of several awards.

2000 The Award to the Managerial Excellence 2000, granted by the Municipal Government of Havana.
2001 The Outstanding Workplace of Havana City 2001, granted by the Municipal Government of Havana.
2002 The National Quality Award 2002, granted by the National Center for Quality Assurance.
2003 Iber-American Quality Awards 2003.

Gran Muthu Habana - Getting Here
The excellent location of Gran Muthu Habana makes the hotel an attractive choice for travellers. Within a short walk from the hotel you'll find Havana's main shopping street Calle Obispo, the Gran Teatro, China town, the Museum of Fine Arts and more.
Guests at Gran Muthu Habana are likely to arrive by international flight to Havana's Jose Marti International Airport. In case you arrive at one of the other Internationals airports in Cuba, consider taking a timesaving domestic flight to Cuba's fascinating capital.
Some of Cuba's most outstanding natural attractions like the Valley of Viñales or the eco-village Las Terrazas are easy to reach by car. A relaxed way to see a lot of Havana is offered by the "hop on hop off" sightseeing bus. This open top bus tour takes you along various interesting parts of the city.
